Neoproterozoic Microfossils from the Margin of the East European Platform and the Search for a Biostratigraphic Model of Lower Ediacaran Rocks

چکیده
A ca. 600 m thick siliciclastic succession in northern Russia contains abundant and diverse microfossils that document early to middle Ediacaran deposition along the northeastern margin of the East European Platform. The Vychegda Formation is poorly exposed but is well documented by a core drilled in the Timan trough region (Kel’tminskaya-1 borehole). Vychegda siliciclastics lie unconformably above Tonian to lower Cryogenian strata and below equivalents of the late Ediacaran Redkino succession that is widely distributed across the platform. The basal ten meters of the formation preserve acritarchs and fragments of problematic macrofossils known elsewhere only from pre-Sturtian successions. In contrast, the upper, nearly 400 m of the succession contains abundant and diverse large acanthomorphic acritarchs attributable to the Ediacaran Complex Acanthomorph Palynoflora (ECAP). This distinctive set of taxa is known elsewhere only from lower, but not lowermost, Ediacaran rocks. In between lies an additional assemblage of relatively simple filaments and stratigraphically long ranging Manuscript Click here to view linked References

Large spinose microfossils in Ediacaran rocks as resting stages of early animals.
Large (>100 microm), profusely ornamented microfossils comprise a distinctive paleontological component of sedimentary rocks deposited during the Ediacaran Period (635-542 million years ago). Smaller spinose fossils in Paleozoic rocks have commonly been interpreted as algal cysts or phycomata, but the Ediacaran populations differ from modern algal analogs in size, shape, ultrastructure, and int...

The Band-e-Hezarchah granitoids mainly include alkali granite and granite. that intruded in Late Neoproterozoic metamorphic rocks. Orthoclase, microcline, plagioclase, quartz and biotite are the main rock-forming minerals. Plagioclase is mostly albite and oligoclase with Si = 2.57-2.7 a.p.f.u. and An0.4–12.6. Biotite is mostly siderophyllite, with Si = 4.30-6.22 a.p.f.u. and XMg= 0.025 - 0.859....
متن کامل740 Ma vase-shaped microfossils from Yukon, Canada: Implications for Neoproterozoic chronology and biostratigraphy
Biostratigraphy underpins the Phanerozoic time scale, but its application to pre-Ediacaran strata has remained limited because Proterozoic taxa commonly have long or unknown stratigraphic ranges, poorly understood taphonomic constraints, and/or inadequate geochronological context. Here we report the discovery of abundant vase-shaped microfossils from the Callison Lake dolostone of the Coal Cree...
متن کاملRelations between Deep and Shallow Stratigraphic Units of Northern Iraq during Cretaceous
The studied area includes Sulaimani, Erbil and Dohuk Governorates where Cretaceous rocks are well exposed in the High Folded Zone of North and Northeastern Iraq. This area is part of the northwestern boundary of Arabian platform near to Iranian border. In these governorates, the study tries to clarify the relations between deep and shallow stratigraphic units (formation or facies) during Cretac...
متن کاملHydrocarbon biomarkers of Neoproterozoic to Lower Cambrian oils from eastern Siberia
The Neoproterozoic Era is of widespread geobiological interest because it marks the critical transition from a world of microbes to one where animals become an established feature of the landscape. Much research into this time period has focused on the ventilation of the oceans, as this is widely considered a primary factor driving the diversification of complex, multicellular life. In this stu...
